Programme Highlight
The Hong Kong East Coast Boardwalk reactivates 2.2km of unused space underneath the Island Eastern Corridor into a multi-functional public realm.
East Coast Boardwalk (Western Section) transforms bridge infrastructure into a 24/7 bicycle and pet-friendly promenade. East Coast Boardwalk (Eastern Section) creates a recreational zone with pet garden, glass floor, shared path and multi-function space.
The design leverages the existing Island Eastern Corridor for shelter while integrating smart technologies like wireless mobile charger and BIPV panel. By connecting 3 MTR stations and 2 ferry terminals, it establishes a seamless slow-mobility network. This project sets a global benchmark for high-density urban regeneration through leveraging the existing infrastructure.
A standout feature of the project is the movable bridges, constructed using high-strength S690 steel. This material was adopted for its durability in marine environments and superior strength, enabling a lighter and more efficient structure. By reducing weight, the material usage is minimized for sustainable construction. The techniques of lifting the remaining deck section and fabrication of high-strength S690 steel will be shared on this visit.
